Four graduate researchers awarded for efforts to combat pandemic

After a year of studying COVID-19 in real time, four Iowa State University graduate students have been awarded for their efforts to combat the pandemic through research.

Academic honorable mentions include three recent graduates

Three recent Iowa State alumni received honorable mentions for this year's Karas Award for Outstanding Dissertation and Zaffarano Prize for Graduate Student Research.

Karas Award

The Karas Award for Outstanding Dissertation award recognizes students with superior research in four rotating disciplinary areas: Humanities and the Fine Arts, Mathematical and Physical Sciences and Engineering, Biological Sciences, and Social Sciences. This year, one alumna received an honorable mention for the award.

Mechanical Engineering graduate Bowei Zhang awarded with Zaffarano Prize

Dr. Bowei Zhang, a Ph.D. graduate from Iowa State’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, is the recipient of the 2020 Zaffarano Prize. The Graduate College awards this prize annually to graduate students who show superior performance in publishing research in academic journals.

Postdoctoral scholar Trevor Nolan wins Karas Award, Zaffarano Prize

Dr. Trevor Nolan, a postdoctoral scholar in the Genetics, Development & Cell Biology Department at Iowa State, is the recipient of two academic awards from the Graduate College. He has won the 2019 Karas Award for Outstanding Dissertations, as well as the 2019 Zaffarano Prize for Graduate Student Research.
